Once known as the “Mommy Makeover”, the tummy tuck is acquiring a broader and brighter reputation with the help of liposuction. The combination of these cosmetic surgeries has become a saving grace for patients looking for a slimmer midsection, as it reduces the surgical trauma and complications associated with the tummy tuck. This pair also produces better surgical results that recipients enjoy for the rest of their lives.
This surgical duo is turning heads in the medical community. A recent study by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) assessed the risks and outcomes of the combined liposuction and tummy tuck procedures, often referred to as ‘lipoabdominoplasty’. According to this study, patients who underwent liposuction had a very low chance of forming seromas, or collections of fluid under the skin. Tummy tuck patients were slightly more likely to form seromas, which sometimes caused surgeons to leave behind excess abdominal fat during the operation. The study found that patients who opted for shorter periods of ultrasonic liposuction before having a tummy tuck were less likely to form seromas, which led to better surgical results.
Patients who opt for this combined procedure are more satisfied with their overall results. According to another study conducted by the ASPS, patients who underwent both liposuction and tummy tuck procedures (rather than one or the other) reported the highest rate of satisfaction with their results. In fact, 98 percent of patients claimed they would undergo the surgery again, and 99 percent said they would recommend the combined procedure to others. The most intriguing and, perhaps, appealing, revelation this study made was that the vast majority (86 percent) of patients reported having higher self-esteem, and 70 percent said they enjoyed an enriched quality of life following this combined procedure.
