As both a board certified gynecologist and a Diplomat of the American Board of Cosmetic Surgery, Dr. Mark Youssef is uniquely suited to perform vaginal rejuvenation, also known as female cosmetic genital surgery (FCGS), at his Los Angeles practice. Vaginal rejuvenation procedures can improve the aesthetic appearance and function of female genitalia, while also enhancing sexual gratification, comfort, and self-esteem. Many women don’t realize that their concerns about vaginal looseness, enlarged or irregular labia, and/or loss of sexual satisfaction can all be addressed in just one surgical visit.
Vaginoplasty and labiaplasty are the two most common procedures performed for vaginal rejuvenation, and since they focus on different areas of anatomy, these two distinct procedures can be performed individually or together. Dr. Youssef’s patients appreciate his candor and his position that there is no such thing as a strange or embarrassing question. He takes plenty of time to go through each patient’s health history, concerns, and questions about these procedures in a friendly and highly professional manner. The end goal is to come up with a mutual plan based on realistic hopes and expectations, and to tailor the procedure or procedures to each unique individual who comes into the office. Every patient should feel free to talk to Dr. Youssef about concerns, thoughts and reasons behind pursuing vaginal rejuvenation surgery, desired outcomes, and anything else relevant to the discussion.
Beyond the benefits of aesthetics and confidence, a clinical study published in the Journal of Sexual Medicine showed that more than 92 percent of women who underwent both vaginoplasty and labiaplasty reported improvement in their sexual satisfaction. That study emphasized that there is a wide range of normality when it comes to genitalia, but that women who choose modification for a variety of reasons overwhelmingly consider the outcomes to be excellent.
Vaginal rejuvenation is made up of two procedures:
Vaginoplasty and labiaplasty are generally outpatient procedures performed under general anesthesia. Using small incisions, Dr. Youssef removes the excess tissue lining the vagina (vaginoplasty) or removes and reshapes the excess labia skin (labiaplasty). These procedures usually take an hour or two, and the incisions are typically closed with dissolvable sutures.
Patients will experience some discomfort and tenderness around the genitals after their vaginal rejuvenation surgery. This will lessen in the days that follow, and the pain is usually manageable with the use of oral pain medication, taken as directed. In order to encourage healing, patients are asked to avoid sexual intercourse for at least six weeks after surgery. In addition, patients are instructed to avoid vigorous exercise, tampons, tight clothing, thong underwear, bathtubs, and hot tubs.
Complications during or after these vaginal rejuvenation procedures are rare, however, as with most surgical procedures, bleeding, infections, and scarring are potential risks. These risks can be minimized by choosing a doctor with the appropriate training and experience in vaginoplasty and labiaplasty, such as Dr. Youssef, and by carefully following the post-operative instructions provided.
Vaginal rejuvenation is obviously a very personal and sensitive topic, but it’s one that’s becoming increasingly common. One recent professional industry study revealed that labiaplasty is one of the fastest-growing cosmetic procedures, meaning more women are asking about it from year to year.
Be sure to ask Dr. Youssef any questions you might have, and don’t be shy when it comes to discussing what a vaginoplasty or similar procedure could mean for your day-to-day life.
