Should You Choose Cheek Implants or Cheek Fillers?
It can be challenging to figure out which procedure option is right for you; especially when there is more than one way to reach your goal. The truth is that while it may seem like many of your cheekbone augmentation options will produce the same results, there are actually many subtle and obvious differences that are important to understand.

Cheek Augmentation: 2 Different Goals
There are two main reasons that patients consider cheek augmentation fillers or implants.
The first reason often has a lot to do with a patient being overwhelmingly dissatisfied with the simple structure of their facial bones. Younger patients often desire a more permanent projection in the cheekbones and often receive cheek implants or a cheek lift. A cheek lift is often either satisfied surgically by way of a Los Angeles mid-face lift or by way of a cheek thread lift (w/ PDO). Augmenting the cheeks can improve the overall facial structure or balance of the cheeks and also improve the look of a “baby face”. Increasing the cheekbone’s height pronounces a more angular facial structure. Cheek implants create a natural-looking cheekbone projection that many people find very attractive.
The second reason is often due to a normal volume loss in the cheek area due to normal signs of aging. As we get older, our subcutaneous facial fat begins to dissipate, causing a hollowing appearance. Restoring volume in the cheeks often helps patients feel more youthful and regain any confidence they may have lost.
Cheek Implants vs. Cheek Fillers
Whether your cheekbones have always been rather small or you’ve started to notice the cheek area shrink back over time, cheek augmentation through dermal fillers or cheek implants is a popular request we receive in our Santa Monica practice. Enhanced cheekbones are a symbol of youth and vitality, and it’s relatively easy to achieve this look through the use of dermal fillers or cheek implants with little downtime and natural-looking results.
Dermal Fillers for Cheek Augmentation
Although temporary, dermal fillers may be used for cheek augmentation when the fat pad in the area has begun to shrink. This is the least invasive route to go, as a very fine needle is used to inject the filler. Patients prefer this route because it’s less invasive than surgery and costs less than the initial charge for cheek implants.

Cheek Implants: A more permanent solution
Cheek implants, while a surgical procedure and therefore more invasive than injectable fillers, only take about 30-45 minutes in surgery. After the surgery is completed, you have healed and swelling has gone down, you can expect to maintain your cheek enhancement results throughout your lifetime. Follow-up appointments are necessary to ensure the implants are in good shape and so Dr. Youssef can make sure that you’re recovering well after surgery. Patients prefer cheek implant surgery when they want a permanent solution, without repeat visits to our practice for more dermal filler treatments. While the initial cost is higher than that of an injectable treatment, the long-term savings are high in time spent in our practice, future appointment booking and long-term costs associated with repeat dermal filler treatments.
