    The Importance of Facial Balance

Facial balance is considered one of the most fundamental components of a person’s beauty. An attractive appearance is by definition characterized by symmetry, aesthetically pleasing proportions and an overall harmony between facial features.

    Nose & Chin Surgery

Both the chin and nose play the most dominant roles in defining a person’s fundamental profile, however, the chin is what creates a pleasing frame for the face.  While the nose does play a significant role in a person’s facial beauty, a nose reshaping surgery is often recommended for those concerned about their nose’s balance compared to their face. Rhinoplasty and Chin Augmentation are often performed in conjunction to help improve the patient’s overall proportion and contour.

    Chin Augmentation Surgery

The chin plays a very important role in creating a defined facial line and overall contour. A recessed or underdeveloped chin for example could create a sense of imbalance or disharmony that prevents other features from looking their best. A weak chin can disrupt the aesthetics or definition from one’s jawline and add prominence to the nose and/or forehead. This may very well affect a person’s overall self-esteem and alter the way you are perceived by others.

On the contrary, a strong chin resembles the impression of strength, confidence, and good health – studies even show that a defined jawline may in fact lead to higher employment and salaries.

Chin augmentation strengthens a receding or weak chin to help restore balance to the face and create a more proportionate and defined youthful contour. If you are looking for a more non-permanent solution to chin augmentation, a patient may seek non-surgical chin augmentation in Los Angeles.

    What is Chin Augmentation?

A chin augmentation, also known as mentoplasty, is a surgical procedure to reshape or enhance the size of the chin. It may be done either by inserting an implant or by moving or reshaping bones. Chin surgery helps provide a harmonious balance to your facial features so that you feel better about the way you look.

    How Does The Procedure Work?

The chin augmentation operation is most frequently performed using light sleep anesthesia or, when combined with other procedures, general anesthesia is necessary. Patients usually sleep during the operation. Much of the time, patients have very little memory of the operation itself. After this state is achieved, medicines are given to produce numbness of the surgical area. This procedure takes from 1 to 1 1/2 hours to perform. Depending upon your facial structure, the incisions will be placed as inconspicuously as possible.

For chin implants, the incision can be either where the gums and lip/facial skin meet or under the chin. The risk of infection is higher if an incision is placed within the mouth area, although a strict post-operative oral hygiene regimen can decrease this risk. The implant is sized to fit the patient and is inserted through an incision under the chin or to either side of the mouth. New developments in implant technology called anatomical implants create balance and definition to the facial features while maintaining a natural look.

What Are The Risks and Recovery Time?

As with all surgical procedures, there are certain risks and side effects you should be aware of when considering chin augmentation. The most common post-surgical complications include infection and excessive bleeding. In some cases, the nerves are damaged during the surgery, causing long-term or even permanent facial numbness. In some cases, the final result is not symmetrical or the chin implant moves into a position which skews the jawline. Although these complications are rare, they do happen. This will be discussed with you in detail when you have your consultation for surgery.

You may experience moderate discomfort for the first few days to a week after your chin augmentation surgery. The area will be covered with a bandage, and your lower jaw will be tender, swollen, and bruised. Your ability to chew will be limited, so you will probably need to limit yourself to liquids and soft foods for a couple of days. Most patients report returning to work and normal activities within seven to 10 days. You may have some swelling for several weeks or even months. Because of this, the final result may not be seen for three to four months after the procedure is done. However, once you are healed and all is well, most chin implants are good for life!
