Chemical peels—also known as derma-peeling—are a technique used to improve the appearance of skin. During a treatment, available at YOUnique Cosmetic Surgery in Los Angeles, a chemical solution is applied to the skin that will eventually cause the surface layers of the skin to peel off. Chemical peels are performed on the face, neck, and hands. The new skin will be smoother and less wrinkled.
This treatment is considered an advanced clinical skin rejuvenation that helps repair damage from sun exposure, as well as reverses the signs of aging. Chemical peels also stimulate collagen growth in the deeper layers of the skin.

What's YOUnique about chemical peels?
There are four types of chemical peels:
- Alpha Hydroxy Acid (AHA) or Glycolic Acid Peels
- BHA (Beta Hydroxy Acid), BetaLift® or Salicylic Acid Peels
- Vi Peels
- TCA (Tricholoroacetic Acid) Peels
Each one is used to treat different skin problems. During your consultation, your doctor will decide which peel is right for you based on your desires and skin condition.
In certain skin types, there is a risk of developing a temporary or permanent color change in the skin. Taking birth control pills, subsequent pregnancy, or family history of brownish discoloration on the face may increase the possibility of developing abnormal pigmentation. There is a small risk of reactivation of cold sores in patients with a history of herpes outbreaks. However, the breakouts are treated with medication and should clear up quickly. Dr. Youssef may also choose to give you medication before or immediately after the peel in order to prevent a herpes outbreak.
Depending upon the type of chemical peel, a reaction similar to sunburn occurs following the procedure. Peeling usually involves redness, followed by scaling that ends within three to seven days.
