BOTOX® for Santa Monica, Beverly Hills, and Los Angeles

Smooth Your Skin With This Injectable Cosmetic

Call them what you will—frown lines, worry lines—but wrinkles are a part of life. While they can appear just about anywhere, they are most prominent on your face, where your forehead acts as something like a billboard advertising the aging process. You don't have to send the message that you are looking older, however. BOTOX®, a Santa Monica favorite available at our cosmetic surgery practice in the Los Angeles area, smooths out those forehead wrinkles, giving you a clean look that radiates youth and health.

BOTOX® works by blocking nerve impulses, a strategy that relaxes key muscles, causing wrinkles to relax and soften. It can take up to four days to start seeing the desired results, and the effects can last up to six months. This is a very popular and well-known cosmetic treatment around the world, but you may still have questions or want to know if it is the right option for you. As with any procedure, understanding the benefits and risks, as well as what your results may be, is an important factor when it comes to making a decision.

Our expert injectors will talk about BOTOX® for Santa Monica, Beverly Hills, and Los Angeles area patients and others. To schedule a free consultation or get more information, call (310) 434-0044.

What's YOUnique about BOTOX®?

BOTOX® is one of the many brand names for the neurotoxic protein called botulinum toxin that is produced by the bacterium Clostridium botulinum. When injected in small doses, BOTOX® effectively reduces frown lines and worry lines for months at a time.

This is a non-surgical procedure done in-house. The whole treatment takes only 10 minutes, and no recovery time is needed. Once your provider determines the injection sites—spread across the patient's forehead, typically above and between the eyebrows—he will administer several injections into the muscles using a small syringe.

BOTOX® Cosmetic takes approximately seven to 10 days to fully take effect; however, some patients begin to see results within a few days after the treatment. The effects of this treatment regularly last up to four months, but may vary from patient to patient. If the patient decides to discontinue regular administration of the BOTOX® Cosmetic, there are no proven adverse reactions.

It is common for patients to have subsequent treatments as the effects wear off and lines begin to reappear. But after each treatment, the wrinkles are less severe when they return. This is because, over time, your muscles are becoming accustomed to relaxing.

What else is involved in BOTOX®?

BOTOX® Cosmetic is an extremely popular non-surgical treatment enjoyed by both adult men and women alike. It has been administered much more than 10 million times since it was first introduced. The prescription medication is injected into the muscles to treat the unforgiving "11's" or frown lines we develop as we age. BOTOX® works by blocking the nerve impulses to the injected muscles, thereby temporarily reducing the muscle activity and decreasing the moderate to severe frown lines.

Dr. Youssef performs BOTOX® Cosmetic injections himself at his Los Angeles clinic. Since this is not a surgical procedure, they are administered during a relatively quick visit and require no downtime afterward. The ease with which the procedure can be administered makes this a welcome alternative for people who do not want to undergo a more invasive treatment.

Dr. Youssef generally uses a cold pack to minimize discomfort, pain, and bruising. In some cases, numbing cream may also be applied. The injections themselves should take no more that 10 to 15 minutes.

Patients are able to go back to normal activity after the treatment but are recommended to not lie down for four hours and not to work out for the first 24 hours. However, makeup may be applied shortly after the treatment.

Side effects associated with this procedure are usually minimal and completely go away with time. The most common side effect is localized bruising. Other side effects that may occur are headache, nausea, or indigestion. Patients who are breastfeeding, pregnant, or planning to become pregnant should advise their doctor prior to receiving BOTOX® injections.

Side effects with BOTOX® are rare but may include the following: pain at the injection site, swelling, redness, bleeding/bruising, inflammation, and infection. More severe side effects may include dry mouth, tiredness, headache, neck pain, eye problems, and allergic reactions. Please contact us at YOUnique if you experience these side effects.

Patients may be recommended to not receive a BOTOX® treatment if they have any of the following: allergy to BOTOX® or its ingredients, allergy to similar products such as Dysport® or Myobloc®, active skin infection, disease affecting muscles and nerves, breathing and swallowing problems, bleeding problems, recent facial surgery, facial muscle weakness, or drooping eyelids. A woman also may be advised against it if she is pregnant or breastfeeding.

Some Background on Wrinkles

You may see wrinkles forming on your face and think only that you want to get rid of them, but you should know that there is more to the appearance of unwanted lines and creases than simply getting older—and the differences impact how wrinkles can be treated.

Wrinkles come primarily in one of two forms: dynamic or static.

Dynamic wrinkles are made by motion. These begin to appear as muscles repeatedly push the skin into the same shapes year after year after year. Eventually, the skin gets used to creasing a certain way, and what was once smooth is now a web of lines whenever certain expressions are made. The process is intensified by the body's ongoing loss of elastin and other natural components that keep skin stretchy and easily able to bounce back to its unlined state.

The blame for static wrinkles can also be pinned on diminishing elastin, collagen, and similar elements of healthy skin, but they form on their own, with no help from facial muscle contractions. Think of how smooth moist earth looks, but how ridges and cracks form as it dries out.

Since BOTOX® works as a muscle relaxant, it is used for reducing the appearance of dynamic wrinkles. Dermal fillers and other treatments are available for treating static wrinkles, and the two can be used together to give your face an overall rejuvenated look.

The BOTOX® Difference

While BOTOX® is probably most famous around the world for its cosmetic uses, it also has a variety of medical uses built on its reputation as an injectable backed by years of clinical trials, studies, and millions upon millions of safe, successful, and effective applications.

BOTOX® Cosmetic is FDA approved to smooth out frown lines on the forehead and crow's feet next to the eyes. It is also frequently used in what are considered "off label" applications, established and accepted by the general medical community as safe and effective. In these cases, BOTOX® is used to relax certain eyebrow muscles to change a scowling appearance, reduce the appearance of wrinkles known as bunny lines on the nose, prevent an overly gummy smile, stop downturns at the corner of the mouth, and obscure platysmal bands that create an "11" on the throat.

On the non-cosmetic front, BOTOX® can treat spasms in eyelids, upper limbs, and neck muscles; chronic migraines; overactive bladders; improper eye alignment; and hyperhidrosis (overactive sweat glands in the underarm area). Doctors across the United States routinely and confidently give it to their patients.

The Younique Approach to BOTOX®

The popularity of BOTOX® has made it easy to find, especially in the Santa Monica and Beverly Hills area, but that does not mean that every person offering the injectable is equally capable of delivering ideal results. As a cosmetic surgeon, Dr. Youssef has devoted years to study of the human face and has gained practical experience throughout both his education and career. His thorough understanding of facial bone structures, musculature, and more allows him to see the face as a whole with an understanding of how a change to the look of the forehead can impact the eyes, cheeks, and other features.

Dr. Mark Youssef has passed on his expertise by training his well-qualified and experienced injectors to safely administer BOTOX® for maximum results. Patients who choose this particular product know they will be getting the injectable manufactured by Allergan, maker of Juvéderm®, Natrelle® gummy bear breast implants, and other trusted products.

More Than BOTOX® in Santa Monica

The Younique team works to make sure you get the results you are looking for, which is why he offers a variety of treatments with a range of benefits at his practice.

Dysport® is another botulinum toxin type A based injectable that relaxes muscles to smooth our wrinkles. Its formula is different from BOTOX® in that it disperses more easily, making it well suited for treating larger areas. It also seems to produce effects in just a couple of days after injection, which would make it more fast acting than BOTOX®.

Injectables to treat static wrinkles at Younique Cosmetic Surgery include Juvéderm®, Perlane®, and Restylane®. These dermal fillers add volume to create smoother skin, and they are often used to complement the effects of BOTOX®, but can also be used as standalone treatments.

A customized mix of minimally invasive treatments, including BOTOX®, can be used to create what Dr. Youssef calls the "liquid" or "non-surgical" facelift.

Patients looking for a longer-term solution than BOTOX® provides may opt for a surgical procedure, such as a brow lift, which addresses forehead wrinkles—particularly frown lines—by tightening the skin there. A blepharoplasty can also alter the look of the area around the eyes, though it focuses not on crow's feet or wrinkles, but on drooping tissue that can create a semi-permanent look of tiredness, confusion, or anger.

BOTOX® can also be used to complement or enhance the effects of a facelift or other surgical procedure.

Dr. Mark Youssef and his team at Younique Cosmetic Surgery will work with you to help you plan the best treatment or combination of treatments for delivering the cosmetic results you want.
