What's YOUnique about Breast Augmentation Surgery?

Breast implants come in a variety of shapes, sizes, and materials, reflecting the diversity of women seeking to add volume to their chests via breast augmentation. Some patients want their newly enlarged breasts to be obvious and round. Others want the results to be subtle and more natural looking. The choice depends on personal preference, but takes incision location, implant placement, and more into account.

The YOUnique team is prepared to discuss all of this with any woman who has questions as she tries to figure out which implant type is best for her breast augmentation procedure. Los Angeles-area patients, and even women from out of the area, are welcome to come in for a breast augmentation consultation.

The Breast Augmentation Procedure

A typical breast augmentation procedure lasts about an hour and a half to two hours. If you have chosen to combine another body contouring procedure with your breast augmentation, overall time in surgery is a bit longer but your recovery time will be shorter than having each procedure performed separately.

Dr. Youssef performs breast augmentation surgery at his Santa Monica facility as an outpatient procedure. Once your augmentation is complete, you will be given a pressure bandage to be worn around the chest. You will follow up with Dr. Youssef at your post-operation appointment the next day and he will thoroughly go over recovery instructions with you.

Breast Augmentation Implant Types

Dr. Mark Youssef uses three main types of implants for breast augmentation at his practice:

  • saline
  • silicone
  • Gummy Bear

Saline implants are filled with a sterile saltwater solution pumped into a silicone shell. During a breast augmentation procedure, that shell is inserted first, then filled to the proper size, which means the incisions can be smaller than if a full implant was being used. Saline implants tend to feel slightly firmer than silicone implants. In the unlikely event of a rupture, the harmless saline is absorbed by the body, leading the shell to deflate. A new implant to maintain breast augmentation results can be put into place when the old shell is removed in such cases.

Silicone implants are filled with a silicone gel that has a consistency similar to human fat. Some breast augmentation patients believe that this gives them an even more natural feel. If silicone implants happen to rupture, the gel may stay in place. If it does leak, the shell will remain intact, so the leak may go undetected without ultrasound or MRI, making periodic check-ups important for women who want to keep tabs on their long-term aesthetic results.

Gummy Bear

At YOUnique Cosmetic Surgery, we offer anatomical gummy bear breast implants to breast augmentation patients in the Beverly Hills, Santa Monica, and greater Los Angeles area. Many women consider this type of breast implant for a variety of reasons, including:

  • Newer implant type
  • Won't leak if ruptured
  • Latest in breast implant technology
  • A natural look and feel
  • Can use the same incision methods as other breast implants
  • Stronger shell than the currently approved silicone implants

You can learn more about gummy bear breast implants for breast augmentation by visiting the Natrelle website.

Similar to silicone implants, gummy bear implants are filled with silicone gel that is thicker than standard silicone implants. These are technically referred to as "form-stable" implants, since the gel is designed to remain in place even if the shell fails. They are firm, generally require longer incisions during breast augmentation surgery, and come in a shell with a natural teardrop shape.

Spotlight on Gummy Bear Breast Implants

The Latest in Breast Augmentation for Los Angeles

Breast implants have been a Beverly Hills specialty for decades, since women have opted to get the breast size and shape of their own choosing. As cosmetic surgery has grown in popularity, breast augmentation technology has advanced, leading to breast implants that are increasingly natural and stable.

Gummy bear breast implants represent the latest developments in the field of breast augmentation. While you may have heard of these implants, you may not know the details that keep them a top-of-the-line choice frequently made by women who come to Dr. Mark Youssef for an increase in volume of their breasts.

Facts About Gummy Bear Breast Implants

The first breast implants to gain widespread use were filled with saline, which is a sterile liquid solution (basically, it's just salt water). Advances in medical technology eventually led to the use of silicone in breast augmentation.

The newest type of breast implants to be used by cosmetic and plastic surgeons, often referred to informally as gummy bear implants, are also made of silicone, though it's an even thicker consistency. These implants are technically called form-stable implants, since they will hold their shape even if the casing ruptures.

This is a major difference between the three types of implants. If a saline implant ruptures, the fluid inside will leak out and be absorbed by the body, leading the implant itself to deflate. Silicone breast implants may also rupture, but the silicone will remain in the implant shell or pocket. Routine rupture checks via MRI or ultrasound are recommended to ensure that everything is staying where it's supposed to stay after breast augmentation surgery.

If gummy bear breast implants rupture, the silicone inside is designed to stay in the capsule.

Shapes of Breast Implants

Saline and silicone implants are frequently round, a shape that gives the breasts particular fullness, as well as more projection higher on the breast, also known as upper pole fullness. Gummy bear implants are considered "shaped" implants, as they roughly resemble a drop of water: thicker and rounder on the base, tapering up to a thinner top. This gives the breast more projection at the bottom. The style is considered to be more anatomical and provide a more natural breast augmentation.

Gummy Bear Breast Implants and YOU

The ideal breast implants for a woman will depend on her unique anatomy, the increase in volume she wants, her age, her health, personal preference, and the doctor's professional opinion. You may have an idea of what sort of implant you're looking for, but it's important to trust the process and the doctor, who will guide you toward the breast augmentation results you want with your safety, health, and beauty in mind.

Other Implant Variations

Breast implants come in one of two shapes: round or teardrop (also known as "anatomical"). Round implants can be filled with saline or silicone and add more projection to the overall breast, giving increased volume to both the upper and lower portions. Silicone-filled INSPIRA® implants by Natrelle® are specifically designed with a higher fill ration to emphasize fullness while remaining soft. In cases of implant rotation after breast augmentation, a circular shape means the implant will look the same no matter which end is up.

Teardrop implants, also known as anatomical implants, can be filled with saline, silicone, or form-stable silicone. These implants mimic the natural slope of a breast, adding more projection to the lower portion, though cases of rotation are apparent.

Implant shells can be either smooth or textured. The smooth shells allow for greater motion within the breast pocket, which some breast augmentation patients believe creates a more natural look. Textured implants encourage the development of some internal scar tissue, which helps to anchor the implants in place and lessen the chances of rotation.

Breast Augmentation Incision Locations

At YOUnique, Dr. Youssef performs all four possible breast augmentation incision methods: around the nipple (periareolar), under the breast (inframammary), through the armpit (transaxillary), or through the belly button (TUBA).

Smaller incisions with smaller resulting scars, as well as a great amount of direct placement control, are highlights of the peri-areolar breast augmentation incision option.
Peri-areolar Incision - This incision allows Dr. Mark Youssef a great amount of control over placement, considering that it is made directly on the breast. Any scarring is typically camouflaged by the color transition between the areola and the rest of the breast skin. A breast augmentation patient's unique anatomy and the size and type of breast implant will help to determine whether this incision is ideal, since smaller areola may not be as compatible with larger implants, particularly gel-filled ones.
The doctor performing breast augmentation can gain direct access and visibility for implant placement, while hiding any scars, with this technique.
Inframammary Fold Incision - The accuracy allowed by this incision, coupled with the fact that any scarring is hidden beneath the breast, make it a popular one for breast augmentation patients. Incisions made in the breast crease can also be longer than those made around the areola, which means they can more easily accommodate larger and less-flexible breast implants.
Hidden scars, such as those tucked into the underarm area with this breast augmentation incision method, are preferred by women receiving implants.
Transaxillary Incision - This underarm incision keeps any scarring from appearing on the breast itself, and is typically the least noticeable of all breast implant insertion areas. Dr. Mark Youssef must create a pathway from the armpit to the breast, positioning the implant from the more distant access point. An endoscope allows him to maintain visibility and place the implant with care during the breast augmentation surgery.
The TUBA incision, which stands for Trans-Umbilical Breast Augmentation, keeps any resulting external scars far from the breast tissue itself.
TUBA Incisions - Like the underarm option, this incision avoids scarring on the breast itself and requires Dr. Mark Youssef to create a channel from the insertion point (in this case, the navel) to the placement point. He will use an endoscope to see the necessary structures. TUBA is a breast augmentation incision option available only for patients receiving saline implants, since the process involves the insertion of empty shells that are filled with saline once put into place. Silicone implants come pre-filled with gel.

Depending on your specific breast augmentation goals, as well as body type, one incision method may be a better option for you than another. Dr. Youssef will assess which implant type and incision method will help achieve the look you desire.

Breast Implants—Over or Under the Muscle?

When performing your breast augmentation, Dr. Youssef will place the implant on top of or underneath the chest (pectoralis) muscle, depending on your body type and skin elasticity. If you are a candidate, Dr. Youssef may perform a dual-plane approach where the top half of the muscle is covered by the implant and the bottom half is covered by breast tissue. This will be determined in your pre-operation meeting with Dr. Youssef.

There is no right or wrong answer when it comes to making the various decisions necessary for any woman considering breast implants, but it is important that patients are fully informed of the available options so that they can discuss their preferences with their doctor during the consultation phase.

The chest muscle does serve an important function for women seeking breast implants in Beverly Hills. The chest muscle, or pectoralis, helps the implant by both providing soft tissue coverage and shaping the breasts. When an implant is subglandular, the doctor positions it between the pectoralis muscle and the breast tissue. Submuscular breast implants, on the other hand, are placed beneath the chest muscles. Both positions have their own advantages and disadvantages for breast augmentation.

The Case for Over-the-Muscle Breast Augmentation

Patients seeking breast implants in Los Angeles will want to discuss their daily activities and habits with their doctor prior to settling on a particular type of implant, as personal preference will play a major role in achieving the best possible breast augmentation outcome.

A significant advantage to a subglandular placement of breast implants, also known as over-the-muscle placement, is that when the implant is placed beneath the muscle, the shape of the implant is temporarily altered as the muscle presses down on it when the muscle contracts. This is in no way harmful or dangerous, but patients who do a lot of bodybuilding or weightlifting will likely feel more comfortable with over-the-muscle placement of breast implants.

This is a particularly good breast augmentation option for patients who would prefer silicone breast implants because this material is softer and more likely to achieve a natural shape without requiring muscle to press it down at the top. Also, because existing breast size is a major factor in the decision, women with naturally larger breasts are more likely to have sufficient breast tissue to ensure a successful over-themuscle breast implant placement.

For women opting to receive a breast augmentation in Los Angeles, another important consideration is the degree of existing sagging. A modest degree of sagging can actually be a slight benefit to over-the-muscle placement because it gives the breast implants a natural appearance that can be otherwise difficult to achieve with an over-the-muscle approach. Of course, a more significant degree of sagging will not be resolved with breast augmentation and would instead require a breast lift to address.

The Case for Under-the-Muscle Breast Augmentation

Women pursuing a breast augmentation in Beverly Hills have unique needs and desires heading into the process. For women who have very little breast tissue, a subglandular implant placement would result in a less natural effect, so placing the breast implants under the muscle is usually more preferable.

Placing the breast implants beneath the muscle also helps create the desired teardrop shape with a slight slope at the top rather than an unnaturally round appearance. Different breast implants have different consistencies, and patients opting for a stiffer implant, such as saline, can benefit from the added pressure of the muscle over the implant. This helps create the a more desired slope on top of the breast.

Ultimately, the choice between over-the-muscle breast implants and under-the-muscle breast implants is determined by the patient based on her unique needs and desires. It is essential that candidates for breast augmentation enter the process with informed, realistic expectations and communicate clearly with their doctor. Only then can they achieve the ideal results.

A subglandular placement can reduce a breast augmentation patient's recovery time.
Subglandular Implant - Dr. Mark Youssef will insert subglandular breast implants so they sit below the glandular tissue, but above two muscles in the chest. Specifically, this breast augmentation technique involves implants resting over the pectoralis major and minor alike.
Women with thinner breast tissue may require some muscle to cover their breast implants and hide their edges.
Subpectoral Implant - Breast implants inserted via this technique are directly covered by two types of tissue. The upper portion of the implant sits beneath the pectoralis major muscle, while the lower portion is below glandular tissue. The entire implant rests above the pectoralis minor.
Placing breast implants below the chest muscles can reduce the risk of capsular contracture.
Submuscular Breast Implant - This technique keeps the breast implant above the pectoralis minor, but ensures that it is fully covered by the pectoralis major. Implants are inserted into a sort of muscular pocket, with a muscle layer between them and the glandular tissue.

Recovery and Results

After your breast augmentation, Dr. Youssef will perform a breast exam and provide a support bra to wear for four to six weeks. Some patients may experience swelling or bruising, but this will subside after a week or less.

While recovery is different for each breast augmentation patient, most are able to get up and around the day after their procedure. Most patients will still need to avoid normal activities for about five to seven days after breast surgery. Strenuous exercise should be avoided for several weeks, or as advised by Dr. Youssef. Approved medication is recommended for any discomfort or pain.

In order to ensure the best breast augmentation results, you will be given instructions on how to massage your breasts. This will help to prevent scar tissue from forming around the implants. The staff at YOUnique will make sure you have all of the information necessary to complete your recovery as quickly and as safely as possible.

Combined Procedures

Most women who are interested in breast augmentation at our Santa Monica practice come to YOUnique Cosmetic Surgery to achieve perkier breasts with added volume. Many of Dr. Youssefs patients come to him after having children and want to restore lost volume from breastfeeding as well as through the natural aging process.

A breast augmentation can be combined with other procedures to achieve beautiful body contours. Dr. Youssef often combines the procedure with a tummy tuck or liposuction to reveal feminine and soft curves. If you are interested in other body contouring procedures, you can discuss with Dr. Youssef during your consultation. He will determine if you are a candidate for a "Mommy Makeover," which typically includes breast surgery combined with a tummy tuck or liposuction.

Am I a Good Candidate for Breast Augmentation?

Breast augmentation is one of the most-performed plastic surgery procedures in the United States each year. Women considering getting implants may note their popularity, but not be sure whether breast augmentation is right for them.

As a cosmetic surgeon, Dr. Mark Youssef frequently provides breast augmentation for Los Angeles-area women, and he encourages anyone thinking about implants to ask any questions they may have and learn all they can. Knowledge of what breast augmentation can and can't do leads to realistic expectations and greater satisfaction with the ultimate outcome.

Breast Augmentation and Health

One of the main considerations, if not the most important consideration, for determining the suitability of a breast augmentation candidate is health. This is, after all, a surgical procedure, which takes a physical toll on a person. Women who want implants should be in good physical condition and healthy, which leads to fewer chances of complications, as well as faster healing and recovery time. Ideally, patients will fall within a healthy weight range and avoid smoking.

A state of positive mental health is important, too, as women choosing breast augmentation should be making the decision for themselves, and not because they feel pressured by anyone. A good candidate for the procedure will be able to discuss reasons for wanting the implants with Dr. Youssef and the team, as well as have reasonable expectations of the outcome.

Breast Augmentation and Age

Another factor to consider when it comes to augmentation is age. It is very important that women who get implants wait to do so until their breasts have finished developing. The minimum age of a candidate choosing to get saline implants is 18 years old, meaning you should be a legal adult in the United States. The recommended age range is actually higher for silicone implants, starting at 22 years.

There is not really an upper age limit for women seeking breast augmentation in the Los Angeles area. As long as a candidate is healthy and can physically handle the surgery, she should be able to get the implants she wants.

Breast Augmentation and Expectations

We have already mentioned the importance of having "reasonable expectations" when it comes to breast augmentation. That means women who are dissatisfied with the size or shape of one or both of their breasts and who want an increase in volume should plan on getting exactly what the procedure's name implies: an augmentation. Implants do not give you "new" breasts, but increase the size of the breasts you have. Many women choose a somewhat modest increase, which is enough to create a noticeable change in size, but preserves proportion between the breasts and the rest of the body.

Breast Augmentation and YOU

While everyone from friends and family to medical professionals can weigh in on a decision to get a breast augmentation, the choice ultimately lies with you. A good candidate for implants is one who has done her homework on the procedure, who is confident in what she wants, and who clearly communicates her aesthetic desires to the team helping her to achieve her goals. A good candidate also understands the risks and benefits of breast augmentation.

It's Up to You, the Breast Augmentation Patient

Dr. Mark Youssef and his team will work to educate you on the benefits of each size, shape, type, and texture option, highlighting what purpose each sort of implant serves and how it might deliver results ideal for your body shape and breast augmentation goals.
