Acne Scar Treatments
What types of acne are there?
At Younique Surgery Center and Med Spa, we generally identify 4 types of acne presentation:
Blackheads
A blackhead is a clogged pore that is just below the surface. Because they are open to the environment, the oil in the blackhead becomes oxidized, which then turns it black.
Acne Vulgaris
Acne vulgaris is a common skin condition in which hair follicles and/or the sebaceous glands that are associated with those follicles become clogged.
Acne Outbreak (Papules)
A papule or acne outbreak is an inflamed pore that is red in color, inflamed, and spreading. Even worse these can become acne scars. No pus is in a papule.
Cysts & Nodules
Both of these types of acne are a little more serious as they are larger and can leave acne scars. With a cyst or nodule, you will notice a large, red bump that doesn’t go away quickly.
What makes acne scarring worse?
There are several things that can make acne scarring worse. Picking/squeezing the acne is one of the big ones and one of the hardest to avoid.
Your genetic makeup also plays a role in scarring, because it determines how well your skin heals. Your genes will dictate if too much collagen is created at the wound site (lifted scars), or too little is made (depressed scars).
The depth of the acne lesions also controls the severity of the scars.
Smoking contributes to worsened scars. Strangely enough, so does cleaning your face too much, using sugary/sandy scrubbing agents (they cause tiny tears that can allow bacteria in), and using too much acne/pimple cream.
Side note: keep your mobile phone surface clean, too. It can have more germs on it than a toilet seat (true fact)! You don’t want that kind of trouble against your facial skin.
How long do acne scars last?
Without treatment, your acne scars are pretty much guaranteed to remain for the rest of your life. Even with treatment, there’s no 100% guarantee all the acne scars will be completely removed. However, most treatments can significantly reduce the size of the acne scars and make them less visible, to the point of being unnoticeable.
