Why do some people get anal skin tags?
Anal skin tags appear as small bumps, raised areas, or dangling excess tissue around the anus and on the surrounding area. Though they start out small, they may become larger over time. Growth seems to be caused by repeated trauma due to cleaning, skin rubbing against them, anal fissures, or clotted hemorrhoids. They can stem from scar tissue that creates extra skin.
Most skin tags grow more where skin rubs against itself. They’re more common in overweight people and are more prevalent in older adults and people with type 2 diabetes.
