Health
A cosmetically-superior way to eliminate actinic keratoses (pre-cancerous lesions).
Consultation
It starts with a personal consultation with your trained and licensed Younique provider. During this relaxing and energizing one-on-one, they’ll discuss your concerns, your goals for treatment, and your medical history. If your provider determines that photodynamic therapy in Los Angeles is the best treatment for your concerns and goals, your session can be scheduled.
Procedure
First, your Younique provider cleanses the treatment area, removing any makeup present. They then apply a topical drug—called a photosensitizer—to the treatment area. Once it’s in place, your provider exposes the treatment area to special LEDs that activate the photosensitizer. It kills cancer cells and acne-causing bacteria. Because of its treatment properties, PDT prevents future acne outbreaks by also reducing the growth environment.
Recovery
Each patient is different, so healing time can take from 2 to 6 weeks depending on the treatment area. Your treated skin will be more light sensitive for up to 3 months after the procedure, so you’ll need to be aware of exposure to strong indoor lighting and sunlight. Because photosensitizing agents affect both unhealthy and healthy cells, you’ll be more sensitive to light even after your treatment is complete. There will be peeling in the treatment area.
How does photodynamic therapy in Los Angeles help my sun spots and wrinkles?
Photodynamic therapy can be used on one’s hands and face to eliminate age spots, sun spots, and wrinkles. The photosensitizing agent and specific light wavelengths cause the cells that are overproducing melanin to die off. New cells grow in their place, providing younger-looking results with less—or zero—difference from surrounding skin.
The treatment also stimulates collagen production as it evens skin tone and tightens skin. Wrinkles lessen over time, and the sun-damaged skin is replaced by fresh, healthy, more youthful-looking skin.
Why do I need to avoid the sun for up to 48 hours after photodynamic therapy?
The photosensitizing medicine put on your skin is absorbed by those cells and the cells immediately surrounding them. This is how the therapeutic light wavelengths can target only the cells with issues. However, that medicine stays in the cells for up to 2 days. Sunlight isn’t a controlled light source, so it can direct incorrect wavelengths at the still-active photosensitizing agents.
Staying out of sunlight for up to 48 hours allows your body to process and eliminate the photosensitizing agents.
