Tummy tucks may be the key to keeping the weight off. Abdominoplasty, more commonly known as the tummy tuck, is an extremely popular procedure in Beverly Hills and the surrounding areas. Although it is a one-time surgery, the tummy tuck can have a lasting effect on those who undergo the procedure. Studies have found that a tummy tuck can lead to further weight loss in patients for up to a year after their surgery.
According to a study conducted by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS), 70% of the female patients that underwent a tummy tuck surgery not only sustained their initial weight loss for a year following the procedure, but also further decreased their Body Mass Index (BMI). An average tummy tuck procedure resects 4.5 – 5 pounds of tissue from the patient’s abdomen. The ASPS study found that the majority of women who received a tummy tuck not only kept the 5 pounds off, but continued to lose weight up to a year after the surgery.
The ASPS hypothesizes that the sustained and continued weight loss following the patients’ tummy tucks may be attributed to increased satiety due to changes in the neuroendocrine system. Satiety, the state of feeling full or satisfied, can be affected by hormone levels in the neuroendocrine system, which can be affected by the amount of fat someone has in their body. Fatty tissue secretes appetite-producing hormones, which produce the feeling of hunger, which compels one to eat more, which, in turn, can lead to more fat storage. Reduction of fatty tissue in the abdomen through abdominoplasty can lead to feeling full more often, which helps recipients control their eating habits, which can lead to further weight loss.
In addition to the ASPS findings, a study published in the Journal of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery established that a tummy tuck can bolster a recipient’s resolve by giving them a renewed excitement to continue to shed pounds. In removing excess fat and loose skin from the abdomen, tummy tucks can gift patients with less discomfort during exercise. This allows recipients to enjoy working out more, which is linked to sustained weight loss.
