    What is blepharoplasty?

A blepharoplasty is better known as an eyelid lift. This type of surgery is designed to improve the appearance of the upper and lower eyelids. Blepharoplasty is fast becoming one of the most popular and common types of cosmetic surgery today. There are 2 types of blepharoplasty: upper lid blepharoplasty and lower lid blepharoplasty. Some patients have both done at the same time.

What is an upper lid blepharoplasty?

Upper lid blepharoplasty is typically done to remove fatty deposits that result in eyelid puffiness. When the skin loses elasticity as a person ages, it can cause the upper lids to stretch out and droop downwards. Sometimes, the upper lids droop significantly enough to impact vision. The upper lid blepharoplasty takes around 2 hours as an outpatient procedure. During this surgery, an incision is made in the natural eyelid crease. Fat and extra tissue are removed and a single tiny stitch then closes the incision.

What is a lower lid blepharoplasty?

In a lower lid blepharoplasty, bags under the eyes and droopy lower lids are eliminated. Lower lid blepharoplasty takes 1-2 hours as an outpatient procedure. Fatty tissue and skin are eliminated through the inner eyelid, which means no external scars are created. A single absorbable stitch is used to close the incision. The skin is tightened with CO2 laser resurfacing afterwards. Dermal fillers like Juvéderm® or Restylane® may be used to help add volume in the eye hollows during a lower lid blepharoplasty as well. This can eliminate the chronically tired look and help a patient look much younger.

What is recovery like after blepharoplasty?

Blepharoplasty recovery typically takes 5-6 days for most patients. For the first few days after the blepharoplasty, most patients have some swelling, bruising, and dry eyes. Some level of discomfort or pain is normal for the first few days, but this is typically well controlled with cold compresses and medication. Incisions should be kept clean and dry, and prescribed ointment should be used exactly as directed. Many patients are back at work within a week of their blepharoplasty.
