What is actinic keratoses?
Also referred to as actinic keratosis, or simply AK, actinic keratoses are precancerous lesions found on the skin from UV ray damage. AK is most common on fair-skinned people who experience high sun exposure throughout their lifetime.
AK can appear as thick, scaly, or crusty patches on your skin. If you suspect you have one of these growths, it’s critical to contact Younique Surgery Center and Med Spa as soon as possible. When left untreated, actinic keratosis may have a 20% chance of developing into squamous cell carcinoma, the second most common type of skin cancer. People who are bald, particularly bald men, are at a higher risk of developing actinic keratoses.
We consider Photodynamic therapy (PDT) the most effective treatment for actinic keratosis. It has a 14% higher chance of complete AK clearance after 3 months compared to cryotherapy. PDT also results in better cosmetic results than similar treatments. It’s essential to have an in-person evaluation to learn if you are a good candidate for photodynamic therapy for AK.

- Photodynamic Therapy (PDT). Light energy combined with a prescription photosensitizer that destroys lesion tissue.
